A therapeutic massage can be one of the most invigorating and enlivening experiences that a person can experience on a regular basis. Massage has been recognized as a practice that promotes health and beauty for thousands of years, and its practices are embedded deeply within the philosophy of each of the world's most influential systems of medicine. One of the things that people aften wonder about when getting their massage is the strange massage therapy chair that they sit in during a session.

A massage therapy chair has a variety of considerations that are taken into account in its construction, not least of which is comfort. When you first sit down in a massage therapy chair you will likely be very impressed by the high level of comfort that it immediately affords you. Oftentimes during a massage you will want to be laying face-down in order to allow your massage therapist access to your back, neck, and shoulders. This is why you will find that massage chairs have an "O" or horseshoe shaped headpiece where you can comfortable lay your head face down. You nose and face protrude through the bottom of this headpiece, allowing you to breath comfortably and to experience no uncomfortable pressure on your face.

The alignment of your spine is also extremely important when receiving a therapeutic massage, because the masseur or masseuse will want to be able to work the muscles and connective tissues into their proper positions based on a healthful spinal position. This accounts for the unique curvature of the massage chair and also much of the profound comfort you can experience when sitting in one. It is because your back is aligned exactly right for optimal alignment of the many muscles that stretch out along your back and hold your body in place while you sit, walk, or run.

Finally, a good commercial massage chair will be constructed of a thick, comfy, padded material that is supportive but allows your body to sink in to match the natural unique shape of your build. This soft padding will be covered with a thick, easily cleaned material to ensure a high level of hygiene for your therapeutic massage.

When you go to a massage parlor, you will often be asked to lay out on a full massage table, which has the benefit of allowing access to parts of your body that are difficult to massage while you are seated in a chair. However, massage chairs have the added benefits of portability and of discretion. Because they are easy to transport, many independent massage therapists will bring around their own massage chair to aid them in servicing you. And because of the way in which a massage chair positions your body, it is not necessary for you to disrobe while receiving this type of massage. This makes chair massage an ideal type of massage therapy for public venues such as fairs, shopping malls, and even upscale grocery stores.
