The Dentist Becomes Less Frightening

Laser dentistry is a different dental treatment modality that is quickly gaining ground among dental practitioners. This method of treatment takes advantage of new advances in laser surgery to produce faster, safer, and less painful treatment techniques that produce fewer side effects and have less risk than traditional treatments. In the following paragraphs we will review some of the benefits of laser dentistry over standard dental treatments. We will also delve into some of the reasons why laser dentistry services remain difficult to find regardless of the tremendous scientific support for the efficacy and lack of risk involved with laser treatment of dental conditions.

Even though the field of medicine overall has advanced so quickly, ordinary dental medicine are still rather violent and unfocused. A simple filling, for example, requires drilling into the outer layer of the tooth with a tiny drill bit. There is substantial threat of permanent damage to the tooth in this everyday treatment, in which case the tooth would eventually be lost.

When a hole has been drilled into your tooth, a bit of metal amalgam or ceramic is placed into the gap in your tooth enamel, with a high probability that the piece of amalgam will wear out and require replacement in just a few short years. By this point, there will often be a need for even more destruction of the outer layer of the tooth. When the cavity grows large enough, a root canal will become unavoidable. This means the entire inner section of the tooth getting drilled through, removing the delicate neural tissue that lives inside.

Dental laser treatment changes this situation quite a bit. A dentist using laser equipment to fill a cavity will likely not need to use any anesthetic. There are no moving parts at work in the laser dental equipment and also no risk of becoming too hot or of causing a fissure in the enamel. The laser itself kills the bacteria that cause the cavity in the first place, meaning there is a dramatically reduced chance of complication after the procedure. What's more, a significantly smaller portion of the healthy tooth enamel is sacrificed in the procedure, and the resulting filling will likely last significantly longer.

We have considered your regular cavity filling as an example, but laser dentistry technology goes further than just this type of common procedure. Dental lasers also facilitate oral surgery that is remarkably clean and precise. Procedures that have used this equipment often have no need for any stitches, produce very little blood loss, and present a significantly reduced danger of infection because the laser that is used actually kills the bacteria that are present at the surgery site. For this reason, oral surgery that is performed with laser technology usually heals quite a bit more rapidly and quite a bit more cleanly than traditional oral surgery modalities.

The only reason why it is presently quite challenging to locate a laser dentistry practitioner is largely because the technology is simply still so new. The equipment is still very expensive, and there are yet only a few dentists who possess expertise in working with it. Due to the substantially improved safety and effectiveness of these types of treatments, it is almost certainly guaranteed that they will be more widely available over the coming years, as an increasing number of dentists receive training in their use.
