Before you start your adventures in catfish fishing, you need to have the right equipment, which includes the tackle. Since you can fish for the big cats or the smaller cats, you need to have an array of tackle as well as equipment.

The area that you are fishing in is going to be another determining factor in the type of equipment and tackle. If you are going to fish in areas with thick cover, you are going to need at least a seventeen pound test line in case the line get hung up on rocks or trees. The rod length is another important factor. Usually a seven to ten foot long rod will do well. The longer the rod, the more distance you will have when casting.

You also want a good spinning reel with some good drag with it. This will be able to handle the fight of the catfish, which is going to be tremendously vigorous. If you are drifting and fishing, it is possible to use just about any type of tackle. If you are drifting, you might want to use a conventional reel rather than a spinning reel. Some anglers have used lighter test line and rods, but they have been lucky enough not to hang on anything as the fight goes on with the catfish. It is best to keep the test line above the fifteen pound weight.

The hooks and prepared baits are another part of your tackle. The hooks that you use will vary. It is best to have a variety of hooks for every situation. That standard baitholder holds are easier to remove, but then there are the spring single hook and the spring treble hooks that are more complicated to remove.

Then there are the regular bait hooks. It is recommended that catfish anglers have a few of each type of hooks. If you are going after the monster catfish, you want to use a spring treble hook or a spring single hook. Fifty pounders and smaller might work with a bait hook. If you are using stinky homemade bait, you will want to use the baitholder hooks. You might want to have a few trotline hooks as well.

The sinker molds are used to get to the bottom. If you have about three or four different weights, you will have enough for catfish fishing. If you are using heavier bait or homemade bait, you might not need the sinker molds. The bait is another thing you need.

Homemade bait is used quite often or you can buy homemade bait. There are many recipes for stinky bait that cost less than commercial homemade bait and it works great. Stinky bait is the best to use for attracting a bite from a catfish.

If you are not very sure about baits, you could use the regular minnows, grub, shad or fish heads for bait. You do not always have to use stinky bait. The fish heads work well for attracting a bite. Minnows are just as easy to use and attract the cat. Your tackle for catfish fishing can be simple or more elaborate depending on your style of fishing.
