On the news every week we hear of horrific car crashes and accidents which often end up causing major injuries or even death. It’s the type of thing you hope and think will never happen to you, but it can which is way it’s important to stay as safe as possible on the road for the benefit of yourself, others in your car and other car drivers on the road. The slightest lapse in concentration can end up in disaster which is why it is essential to stay on the ball whilst driving; below we have put together some safety tips regarding the car and the driver as a guide on how to stay safe on the road to ensure the safety of you and others around you.

The Car

If you are purchasing a new car, make sure you check out its safety rating conducted by EuroNCAP, they test most vehicles and give them a safety rating. These tests would involve seeing how safe it is for pedestrians and car drivers. If you already have a car however make sure it is as safe as possible on the road, the first thing to do is when it is due for an MOT, make sure the mechanic is experienced with a good reputation so any potential problems can be identified with ease. If you are driving along and it feels like there is a problem in any way, for example in the handling or braking, pull over and inspect the vehicle immediately, if it feels really unsafe call of road side assistance in case you put yourself and others in jeopardy

You the Driver

As a driver of a vehicle on the road you have a great responsibility for your own safety and the safety of others around you. In no situation should you consider using your mobile phone without a hands free device on the road, it can seriously affect your concentration and impairs your judgment. Other obvious things to remember are never drive under the influence of drugs and/or alcohol and always keep two hands on the wheel, also do not drive at excessive speeds, always stick to the speed limit. Always make sure you are wearing a seatbelt and others in the car are doing so, especially with children it is essential to make sure they are properly strapped in and are using the relevant car seat depending on their age. Remember if you cause an accident which is your fault due to erratic driving or doing so without due care and attention, it is you who can be brought in front of the court of law and prosecuted.

You may think all of these tips are pretty obvious, but you see people disobeying the laws which are put in place to ensure the safety of drivers and pedestrians. This is the reason why fines and prosecutions for driving offences are getting harsher and steeper. If you stick to all the correct rules and tips it ensures your own safety and results in a pleasurable driving experience.
